The thrust surface of the rear main cap can be built up and planed back close to true and is an adequate temporary fix for an otherwise good engine. A fellow Fool in our club was suffering a severe case of the wandering crankshaft due to wear on the thrust (probably from someone riding the clutch). The thrust surface was built up with solder and he has put quite a few miles on the engine that he otherwise might not have. This is a slow process and requires a steady hand with a soldering iron of sufficient size to retain residual heat. Use solder with no lead and patience. Sadly nothing can be done about the block side so this fix is temporary. Probably only get 8 or 10 K miles out of it... then maybe another temporary fix... and yet another.... Another costly overhaul averted with a little shade tree mechanican'!

: I have a rear main bearing cap that has part of front thrust surface broken away, the babbitt bearing surface looks good, but with part of the front of the babbitt thrust surface broken will this cause a oil leak problem or a bearing problem. If so can just the rear main cap be repaired. thanks for any help.
