restoration question Help!

In replacing the main drive gear bearing retainer to the bellhousing,does the retainer insert/fit from the rear of the housing or is it placed from inside the bell housing? My retainer unit seams like a very tight fit to the housing,Is the bellhousing end tappered in one direction.I zinc coated both parts,so the additional thickness of finish is making this fit tighter than originally when I took it apart.Your input is greatly appreciated.
