Firewall Repair

Does anyone have have experience welding a cut away portion of of firewall? I have a 1931 Tudor which had the bottom middle section (about 10 inches wide and 6 inches high) cut out by the previous owner for a different engine. The original engine is now installed and the car runs, but I need to patch up the opening. I have a piece of firewall I could have cut and welded, but need to know if this is practical (or possible). Replacing the firewall looks difficult. Any ideas? Thanks.
