I wasn't too clear about this in my empassioned dissertation earlier.

There are two different situations

The stock situation where the rear bushing (which is the only one in question) get wet with the contents of the cooling system. In this case what you want is a water-proof grease that won't dissolve, break down, or separate under continuous exposure to hot water etc.In this case the stuff you mention (M 8500) sounds like the right stuff since you don't want the grease decomposing and moving around in your cooling system. You also want to be really judicious about greasing the back bushing since the grease that escapes into the cooling system will ball up and collect in the radiator.

If you have installed a leak-proof pump with seals in the back bushing, then theoretically the water won't get into the bushing, BUT if you over grease you may force the stuff back through the seal into the cooling system. In this case you want water soluable grease so that it just dissolves harmlessly without messing up the system.Of course WHEN your leak-proof seal starts leaking, it'll dissolve the grease in the bushing, and cause quite a different problem.

My vote is for water-PROOF grease applied very judiciously at 500 mile intervals.

The fan bearing can use lithium grease just fine.

Paranthetically when I was using the "A" regularly for transportation, I used chassis lube in the pump, never had a problem with either the pump or the engine staying cool, but my cooling system did look like the run-off of a petro-chemical plant. I did have a lot of nameless by-products circulating around in the cooling system, and had to put a 1/8" bleed hole in the thermostat so it didn't get clogged by the garbage that was circulating. In the winter, however I used Methanol Anti-freeze which cleaned things up nicely by spring so that I could stert messing it up again in the summer.
