============================================================

Thanks to all for the useful information.I just have one confusion left, regarding the soluability of water-pump grease.

I have some water-pump grease that has on the front of the cartridge: Antique Ford CountryM 8500 Water Pump Grease

On the back of the cartridge are these words:
"...We tested a lot of different all-purpose greases until we found the best one for the cars of the Model A Ford period.... We tested it for water pump use by placing a plastic spoon full of grease in boiling water for 5 minutes.While the spoon bent out of shape, the grease was in the same glob as when first placed in the water.Not even a grease film on the surface."
---------------
If water pumps require a soluable grease, then the results of this experiment suggest to me that this grease should be used for anything but water pumps.Is my reasoning on the right track here, and does anyone have experince using this product?

It could be that when the product supplier (Antique Ford Country?) was trying to find a good water pump grease, they felt it should be resistant to hot water.But really, boiling water isn't all that hot (about 212 degrees F, unpressurized).I think the experiment says more about the quality of that spoon the used.
