: : I began adjusting the brakes on my '30 coupe and discovered that the front levers have free play in them. One side about 1/4 inch and the other side 3/8 inch. Should this be and how do I correct it?

: : Thanks for any help. Dick R.

: Dick, I need a little more info. about the play.If you refer to the play of the lever (forward and rearward) with the clevis pin removed, that play could be normal for the way it is being tested.Meaning that taking up the reaward play seats the actuating lever (inside the spindle bolt head) on the top of the vertical actuating rod.If you are speaking about lateral play of the actuating shaft, that is not normal and will require examination to locate that problem and come up with a fix. Referring to Jim Schilds, Restorers Model A Shop Manual will give you some insight as to how the system works and some excellent instructions on how to repair it.
: Have fun!

Dick,

Following up on what Paul said, I would like to see the free play equal on both wheels. This may be accomplished by the use of a brake "pill" in the actuating wedge. The play is almost incidental to the postion where the lever comes to rest when the free play is removed just before the brakes are applied. For proper brake operation the levers should be forward of the center line by about 15 degrees. If the free play is on or to the rear of the center line, then you need to effectively increase the length of the brake operating pin. This may require more "pills" or a longer pin.

Good luck
Doug
