Backfiring

My 29 Roadster PU backfires each time I shift through the gears.It is quite and muffled, but a backfire never the less.I would appreciate some help with resolving the problem.What causes backfiring and how do I eliminate the problem?Does the brand of gasoline have anything to do with it?I appreciate any information and suggestions.Thanks
