| : I finally drove my 30 tudor around the driveway for the first time this weekend,The transmission, pressure plate, clutch, etc, were all redone by a reputable company (no longer in business, however) two years ago so I assume that it was done correctly,This was the first time that I tried to move the vehicle under its own power.The clutch chatter was really bad and it also seemed to have quite a bit of first gear noise (yes there is fluid in it),Short of tearing the trans out and redoing something, does anyone have any suggestions? Hopefully a quick fix will work for you here as what may have happened is you've got a bit of flash rust on either the flywheel or pressure plate face, if not the repair might involve a bit of serious wrench swinging. Put the car in top gear & with the brakes held on plus a bit of throttle(Preferably out of the garage) slip the clutch for a short while, being careful not to get it too hot & this might cure it. If that fails let it cool for a while & try again. If there's any improvement you're on the right track, if not check the following:-
a)All gearbox housing & engine mounting bolts are tight.
b)The shims have been fitted at top of the flywheel housing
c)Radius rod ball tight in mounting
If all above O.K. remove inspection cover on bell housing & get someone to turn the engine over slowly & check all pressure plate levers are equidistant from throwout bearing. If this is not so the pressure plate has been set up incorrectly & will require adjustment. You may be able to do this yourself through the inspection cover & get all levers the same distance from the bearing, but if not it will entail removing the engine & setting up on the floor.
