: After sandblasting I discovered cracks in the flywheel housing just below the attaching bolts radiating out to the sides about 1.5 - 2" (Imagine - a cracked flywheel housing!).

: If (when)you had this problem, how did you handle it?

: Is drilling holes at the end of the cracks, notching the casting and Brazing a viable treatment, or are there better ones?

G'Day Bob,
Bobs' suggestion is good as brazing never really works on cast iron. My suggestion is that you have the casting repaired professionally as I've just had exactly the same problem & tried to repair it with a dis-similar metal welding rod equivelant to the Eutechtic 680. My first problem after grinding a "vee" or weld prep following the crack was as soon as I started welding, about 67 years of absorbed/ingrained oil began bubbling out of the casting causing blow holes in the welding. Once this problem was solved by warming up the housing with a cutting torch to burn out all the oil & re grinding the vee, the whole procedure was repeated, only to have the housing to crack right next to the weld.(A common problem with cast iron welding) The housing will now be sent to the guys that do this for a living.
Regards
DJ.
