The arm from the gas pedal that the spring is on is not cast - it's just mild steel with some fancy forming done at the ball end.there shouldn't be any problem with bending it out to give some clearance. It would be a good idea to support the rod (with a pipe wrench or the like)up by the spring so that the bending force doesn't possibly bend the shaft where it passes through the pivot supports and cause binding there.
