The typical problem with original ignition switches is swelling of the pot-metal they're made of.The elements of the switch expand and no longer slide together they way they should.

You didn't mention whether the switch still works properly (or for that matter whether it's a Pop-Out).

There's a good article on ignition switches and their servicing in the restorer series - I believe it's #3. I can fax you a copy of the pertinent pages if you like (if you E-Mail me your FAX#).

Mine (an early solid-back type) came apart with a good deal of wiggling persuasion, and WD-40. If you can disassemble the switch then the components can be sanded down to a good fit again, and work as good as new unless there's extreme water damage.

While you're at it you can generally juggle & file the tumblers in the lock so that it will work with your door key (unless your door key is a different type).
