I love a good mystery -

The first diagnostic step I'd take would be to define what the interferance is.You could use dry-erase marker applied to the end 1/2" of lining on both shoes, assemble, turn, disassemble, and see where the interferance is as evidenced by the marker being rubbed off.

For example, if the marker is rubbed off on the adjuster end of the lower shoe, then that shoe is being positioned too far forward by the roller track which can be bent or filed to compensate.

If you get marker removed only at the outside edge, maybe your drum is going in too far due to worn tapers at the axle joint. That seems to be pretty common these days.Axle shims will fix this if it's a problem.

I'd mention worn rear inner races which serve to de-center the rear hubs, but I'm assuming that you have the car elevated, so that wouldn't be a factor (the wear is always on the bottom). If you experience drag when the car is on the ground, though, that's a good place to start.

Let us know what you find -
