Sounds like the old vacuum leak situation

Check intake manifold for cracks, broken flange at carbureter joint, bad carbureter gasket.

Check alignment of manifolds with gasket, and port openings. It doesn't take much manifold shift to open leaks. Look for loose manifold nuts.If you don't mind making a mess, squirt some heavy oil around the intake manifold to block joint and see if there's a difference in the way the engine runs. Make sure you squirt from the bottom too.

Check manifold gasket condition - the Copper types work better than any other.Exhaust port gland rings are good for alignment if they'll fit (sometimes the exhaust manifold has changed shape too much).

Check manifolds for flatness and co-planarity of the intake and exhaust port surfaces.

Apply a vacuum gage to the windshield wiper port, and look for signs of valve problems (fluttering or pulsing reading)
