Tom,
Do you have the two or seven tooth steering sector?If you have the seven tooth you may have to bend the arm to clear the head stud and/or bend the control rod arm slightly and with care.With the two tooth sector sometimes you can rotate the steering column to give you the needed clearence.
The bottom line is that you want to get full travel from the spark lever while noting that it is not pushing the distributor body on one end or the other.
