Timing lever

I just read to messages about the throttle lever slipping.But what about the timing lever that doesn't work the distributor through the full range of motion.
My timing rod hits on the head and the head nut and I can't go the full range of motion.It seems that I need a 'taller' timing horn and a longer rod.What gives?Help! (Yes, the timing horn points forward and the throttle horn points rearward).
