Hey - easy fix:
1)Remove fan
2)Charter Fishing boat
3)When 10 miles out, drop fan in ocean
4)Get new fan
5)Live happily ever after
Sounds like the inner taper of the hub is shot which can definitly cause a knocking sound.
(If you don't like fishing, You could accomplish the same thing by burying the old fan in the back yard).
