: I have an old Ford 8N tractor and I understand that the engine that is used is the same as the Model A Engine. I don't have a problem, but have noticed that soon after changing the oil, say a month or so, the oil becomes brownish/grey and gets a little opaque. The oil level does not rise (like water in the crankcas). I can hopefully live with this forever but was just curious as to the cause. Thanks Mark Jones.

I'm not that familiar with an 8N but if it is like an A, then there isn't a full flow oil filter and the splash trays in the oil pan don't drain when you change the crankcase oil. Therefore, there is probably somewhere near a pint or more of old oil mixed in with the new. Some have suggested drilling holes in these trays to let the old oil drain out when changing BUT THIS IS NOT AN OPTION!!These trays are the source for the splash system to pick up oil and throw it on the crank bearings. While it is hard to accept, you either have to live with the dark oil and change it fairly often (I change my A every 500 miles) or go thru a major modification to a pressurized oil system (drilling the crank etc.)
