: jim i had a similar experience with rust in my 31, I took the tank to a radiator shop near me and they dipped the tank in their vat which removed all the rust. after that I had no trouble removing the filter. If you are frienly with a shop as I am they can also dip other parts such as fenders & hood and other small parts. It takes all the rust off. Jim, I think the part you are talking about is the gas tank filler screen. The purpose for this is to stop a fire from igniting gas in the tank. Thus I would think you would need the screw in type for it to work properly. I have not been able make the repro fit well enough. Also after you clean the tank you may want to coat it with a tank sloshing compound to seal any remaining and prevent future rust. Goog luck, Jim |
