You're right - the Battery wire should go to the "-" terminal.It does make a difference in the quality of the spark produced.However, it's probably not the reason that you'r running into problems on the road.I agree that if you've eliminated Gas feed as a problem, the condenser would be my first suspect even if it's new.Then the coil.
