I agree with Larry about the likelyhood of the Fuel supply being the problem.A test that I use is to Start the car, let it die, then immediately shut off the gas, and drop the bowl on the carbureter. This can be accomplished with only one bolt and the choke linkage snaps off.

With the carbureter bowl off, see if there's a good quantity of gas in there (about 1/2 full). If not, the fuel supply is problematic.Put a can under the float valve and turn on the gas.It should come out with the gusto of a large yellow dog. If it just drips out, there's a blockage somewhere along the line - could be the Float valve, work back to the tank until you get a free flow.

WHile the carbureter can block up and refuse to run, my experience is that the Idle will go first (and often if there's particulate matter in the fuel), and I haven't personally seen a carbureter so blocked that it won't run on the high speed circuit.

With the Tillotson carbureter the temporary idle fix was to close the mixture adjust at 30 MPH, retard the spark, and floor the throttle,This would produce a good backfire thru the carb, and normally cure the idling problem for a while (or it would collapse your float). Ah - the good old days!

On the other hand, if the bowl does have gas in it when you pull it off, You could have an ignition problem, probably related to the condenser, points, or coil.Put your spares in and see if it's O.K.

A quick test is to pull the coil wire from the distributer, and hold it close to the block, then crank. The spark should be healthy and have a bluish color. If it's thin and yellow (seen in subdued light) then the Condenser and after that the coil are suspect.

If it's irregular (doesn't look the same twice, or skips), then the points are suspect.

Timing won't be an issue, nor plugs. If it starts, these are O.K. Plugs that foul out don't come back automatically.

Happy hunting
