: My first Model A started and ran well...then overnight I was unable to keep the engine running. Starts ok but dies in about 30 or 40 seconds. Fuel bowl has some crud in it and I wonder if the crud has cloged the jet on my zenith carb. How can I fix this problem?

Hi Dick..

I think all of our resident Model Ayers will agree that there are many causes of your problem, but I'll address the most probable cause, the fuel supply.First, and don't laugh too hard, is the shutoff valve open all the way? Now, let's address the crud problem. If that is the case, the best fix is to remove the gas tank and clean it out good. Both Bobs and Rick have talked about this earlier.Remove the carburetor, and take it apart. The Zenith is not a complicated thing. The Model A parts books have expolded views of the Zenith to aid you in the dissassembly, cleaning and reassembly.Remove the sediment bowl and clean that.Check the brass screen for dirt, clean that, replace the gasket and ressemble. If you decide not to remove the tank, add a screen filter in the top of the shutoff valve. This will raise the "empty" level of the tank about 1/2" to prevent sucking the crud off the bottom of the tank. Idle adjustment needle on the carb is 1 3/4 to 2 turns open, and the dash control is about 1/4 open when warmed up.OK, guys, what about electrical and timing?
