FROZEN GEARSHIFT KNOB

I'm trying to remove the original black gearshift knob, but it is frozen on the shaft.I guess I could remove the shaft and soak it in liquid wrench, but I am wondering if there is an easier way to do it.I really don't want to damage the knob either.Any ideas?
