You're on the right track - sounds like either a problem with tank venting or a partially blocked fuel line between the tank and carb. If just stopping the engine for a while (without opening the cap) solves the problem for a short time, then its probably a fuel line which fills the carb too slowly to keep up with fuel demand.If only opening the cap solves the problem, then it must be the cap vent.Original gas caps had a vent which went from channels in the center of the underside of the cap around the edges between the inner and outer caps.These vent holes should be visible if it is vented.Radiator caps looked very similiar but did not have the channels in the center of the cap and wern't vented.
