Tim,

Of course the obvious is to take the transmission apart. Oil will not remove rust no matter how long you soak.I would not use acid since will also react with iron and too many other things. Here is my suggestion.First drain all of the oil out of the transmission. Next flush it with a solvent such as kerosene to remove the remaining oil. Then remove as much rust mechanically as you can (wire brush, wire wheel, ice pick, screwdriver, etc). You should be able to rotate some of the gears by moving the car or turning over the engine. Then try some penitrating spray, this will loosen some more of the rust.Use a rubber mallet or a block of wood and a hammer to try to move the gears, do not hit them too hard or they might chip. You could also try one of the 'gel' type rust removers but they only seem to work on surface rust. If you do get it free I would put thin oil in it to help collect the rust that will come loose.

Bob
