REpainting original license plates

Anyone have a good way to repaint original license plates without masking?Iowa plates are a dark blue background with white on the raised numbers and letters.I was thinking about spraying the blue, then rolling on the white with a foam roller that was rolled nearly dry to prevent runs.Is there a better way?
