Speedometer cable - hooking it up?

Have 28 Pickup. Purchased new cable and housing. The axel end portion seems to go so far into the fitting, that it loses contact at the speedometer end and it stops operating. Is there some fitting which is made to prevent the axel end of the cable from entering the fitting too far?Thanks.
