Basically there in only one (major)place the oil can get out of the tranny in the front, and that's past the ball-bearing on the pilot shaft (yes it can leak out the shaft ends, but normally not catastrophically). It could be as simple as the main bearing retainer (that the throwout bearing rides on)being loose and allowing oil to leak out past the gasket, or it could be cracked - quite a few of them did.

I'd pull the inspection plate and see what the path of the oil was.If it's coming out the end of the retainer (into the clutch)then maybe it was overfilled to begin with.If it's runing down the inside of the flywheel housing then it's probably the main bearing retainer that's loose or cracked.
