Leaky Transmission

I recently had catastrophic loss of transmission fluid while on a tour.While stopped at rest stop, I noticed it pouring out from the bottom of the bell housing.And, yes, it was 600W transmission fluid that leaked out and not the engine oil.What might have happened, where do I start looking and what recommendations do you have?
