We've discovered, over many years of rebuilding transmissions
back when "new" were either unavailable or awful, that mixing
gears (used) from different boxes never works. The resulting
transmissions are very noisy. They work fine, but they're
obnoxious. In time they do quiet down some.Be sure to use
the 600W or a STP mixture - not 90 weight - if you want to
minimize the noise.Other things that get overlooked - the
end of the main drive gear normally goes into a pilot bearing
in the flywheel.(is that so on a multiple-disc clutch? -
they are unfamiliar to me)The fit between those two must be
perfect - not too tight so it won't slip in and not so loose
that the end of the shaft turns instead of the bearing.Worse
still, sometimes they're so loose that the shaft can actually
move up and down.Usually this causes more vibration than
noise, but I suppose it could. The determination of the box
to not remain in second does clearly indicate that the rebuild
is something of a failure.Did you check and repair or replace
the detents and springs in the shift tower? If you did, I can
only conclude that, had I seen the used gears you were using
I would not have agreed with you on their condition. The
second and high slider can frequently just get too rounded off.
However - I did have another thought - The cluster gear in
early '28 transmissions is shorter than the others and uses
a thrust washer.Obviously, that's not the one Mark Auto makes.
Is the longer gear somehow placing that second gear casting
in not quite the right place?Anyone have other thoughts?
