setting ignition timing

I have a rebuilt engine (bored .060 oversize) and a completely rebuilt distributor.I have set the timing so thatthe spark for #1occurs just as the timing pin slips into the recess on the cam gear. With this setting the car starts very easily but it will not idle down so that I can "count 'em off."At 45 - 50 mph it runs very well at 3/4of full advance. If you run full advance, it hesitates and misses suggestingthat the timing is too far advanced.I have experimented by retarding the timing a little, but then it was very difficult to start although I did get the slow idle that is typical to the 'A."Otherwise gas mileage is typical and accleration is adequate.Any suggestions?
