OK< now a word from a purist.............I also drive a 29 fordor, and the heavier cars really can use better brakes. Juice brakes are an alternative, especially if you intend to use your A as a daily driver. In the interest of preserving the car...check out the new cast iron brake drums being manufactured by Plasmeter Corp for A's,( no I do not work for them and my brother in law does not own the company).
This is by far the best thing I ever did for the old fordor!
Be sure to rebuild all of the brake system compontents, new clevis pins, backing plate bushings, wovem linings etc. You MUST remove all slop from the mechanical system. Carefully adjust the brake tracks to center shoes.Drive the car for a bit to knock off the high spots then adjust the brakes as outlined in the Restorer last year. Since A brakes do not "float" on the backing plate, if you can find a power shoe grinder called "brake doctor", use it. Usually one guy in every local club has one. Avoid letting a brake shop radius the shoes for you, since they do not float, you just wasted lining material.hope this helps...terry plata, dallas
