: : This week I went on my first tour in my A. Things went fine until we turned off the paved road on to a oiled dirt road. My A immediately started to shake. The shake would first start with the steering wheel and proceed to "feed" on it self until the whole car would shake violently. I had to stomp the brake and slow down to about 5mph to get it to stop shaking. A young fellow that has a reputation of being very knowledgeable found my wishbone? loose and tightened it. NO LUCK. Then they checked my kingpins, they were ok.
It seems I was offline too long... didn't send...I'll try again... brief this time. I had the same trouble. I replaced the bolts/springs/spacers on the radius rod ball socket. The spacers allow proper tightness/loosness. Without them the springs hold the socket on the ball so tight the lack of movement causes the radius rod to twist sending jello-gelatin shimmying throught the whole car. I just bought new radius ball socket bolts/springs/spacers through Mike's Affordable... any parts palce will do. Good luck!
: : The road was a little washboard like, but very little since it was oiled red dirt. Shake would occur about 30 seconds after I would reach 20 to 25 mph.

: : Several folks said their steering wheels shook also on the same road but theirs did not "grow" into a total vehicle shake. Most of the A's just drove on down the road at 30 mph without any trouble.
: : My steering wheel has a little play but it drives on the highway just fine.

: : What about the steering shock I see advertised?
: : Where should I look first?
: : thanks, james shotwell

: ........I went thru the whole 9 yds here abt week or so ago see if you can find it.. There are lots of think that will cause shimmy.. Yes the steering dampers do work but I would like to see you find the real trbl. I couldn't find the trbl and no one else could either on my new 74 ford pu so I put a damper on it and it waas fine. Man said if I hadn'y been so cheap and ordered power steering the cylinder would have dampened it.. ha ha oh well..I run 650-16s so use damper as insurance and also a panhard bar..from AC&R......
