Hi Bob
After you`re sure you got the top part entirely out of the threads, try grabbing it with a couple pliers. You may need to use needle nose pliers. You may be able to wiggle it back and forth. If I remember correctly, it was a little hard to get the top and bottom of the screen part past the top of the gas tank neck. It should come out this way, though.
