And finally I think I may have a aftermarket engine, any clues I can go by to be sure? the casting parting lines seem very crude and no engine number. Thanks,Jim

Jim,
Below is some info that was sent to me by Mr. Clayton since I am doing some chasing of NOS engines. Maybe this will be helpful.
"The Model A engine casting apparently was changed sometime in 1932. These later castings have more material on the underside of the water jacket and can be recognized easily by a raised diamond mark above the side timing gear cover on the passenger side. There are other minor differences, but the increased water jacket is the most significant. The diamond mark is just a fast method of identification. Incidentally, these engines came from the factory with hard seats in the exhaust valves. If the blocks were made in the 1928/1931 era and they are NOS, then they probably do not have serial numbers (increases the value also). If made after 1931, then they may or may not have serial numbers. The engines were manufactured up to 1944, so serial numbers go as high as 4872XXX. Clearly, if the blocks are truly NOS, they are worth more than the $250/$500 shown on the board."

Hope this helps. Frank - Knoxville, TN
