Frank,
Yes, I believe you could remove the rear bearing retainer and pull out the rear bearing and mainshaft assembly. The sliding gears would drop off in the trans case.

The real question is why bother? It is awkward overhead work under the car, center crossmember and brake snake will be in the way, and it will be somewhat trickier to reassemble compared to disassembly, and oh by the way, once you get the mainshaft out, you'll probably find the cluster gear loose on it's shaft due to worn shaft and shot bearings.

The trans comes out of the car easy enough (less than two hours). Save yourself some grief and take out the whole trans and work on it on the convenience of your workbench and be prepared to rebuild the whole thing while you've got it out. Might want to chect your clutch disk and pilot bearing at the same time. It's not a bad job at all.

: Is it possible to change the rear transmission bearing (main shaft) by pulling the rear axle assembly out without having to disassemble the transmission from the clutch housing. I have to pull the rear end anyhow and would like to stop a leak that has developed from a failed bearing seal or oil slinger. I know, this is like going to the proctologist to have a tooth filled, but thought somebody may have tried this.
: Thanks.
: Frank
