: : I kust bought a reproduction radiator stone shield for my Model A. I am trying to install it and having trouble getting the large rubber bumpers in the brackets. The bumpers are large enough that once in, they should never fall out. Any secrets or ideas on how to easily get the rubber bumpers installed in the shield?

: Hi Stu,
: If you haven't done so already, try wetting the rubber bumbers wtih soapy water. Then grab the other end tight and push and twist.

Hi Stu.,
another idea is to get hold of a tube of rubber grease and put it on the rubber bumpers. I bought a tube years ago and find it useful on all sorts of things. eg dog bone rubbers, pulling through wiring, installing grommets etc.

I think that putting a stone shield on the model As is a good idea though it spoils the looks of the car a tad. I one in front of my 30 radiator and have added some bronze flywire screening on the shield (radiator side) holding it in position with small bits of tinned copper wire. I ran a 1/2" bead of solder right around the cut to shape screen (and starter hole) to make a neat job of it. IMHO the only flywire worth using is the more expensive bronze type as everything else rots out in no time at all.

In a week or so the flywire goes black so you don't notice it.
The advantage of the inner screen is that the bugs can be hosed off long before they get into the core.

For what it is worth
