Yes, that is how the wood was originally installed, BUT that's not how you HAVE to replace it! It's been a few years since I did the doors, but I managed to rework the corner joints so the wood could be sandwiched in without pulling the door skins off. Some joints had to be reversed, and it took a lot of thinking through. Wish I still had some of my sketches, but it was 15 years ago!!!
Taking the old wood out wasn't a problem, as it was in really bad condition! YOu may need to carefully saw it into sections to remove it. I don't know if anyone is making door wood kits that can be 'reversed installed' I had intentions of doing it, but my investor backed out of the deal. Still seems like a marketable idea.
If your wood is in good shape, but just the corner joints are bad, there is a product called Quick-Poly that can tighen them up and they will be sound.
