Kevin,
I thought I was the only one (besides Henry's engineers) that liked the semi-moulded linings. Joel certainly seems to know the subject while I'm just going by my own experience. If you have followed the many earlier threads on the subject you'll fine most everyone swears by the woven type. If you decide not to use the set you have let me know. I may be interested in them for myself.
As far as the spindle I think you already know the best answer. It's a good time to also confirm the condition of the wheel bearing seats on the spindle. If the bearings were ever run dry they wear down the spindle. You can usually tell by visual inspection or checking that the bearings barely slip into place. For reference the inner diameter measures 1.189", and the outer measures .749".
I've never added anything to the felt, but that doesn't mean there isn't a reason I've overlooked!
