I have had similiar problems with Ford's original shut-off valves - no matter how well lapped the brass valve parts are, the constant fuel pressure causes enough seepage to fill the carb when closed, and the valve in the carb will let the gas seep past and keep the outside of the bowl wet with gas. The only really sure solution is to put a hardware store brass valve (the kind with 1/4" compression fittings and screw-down shut-off handle) in the fuel line between the firewall and the carb. I still try to run the carb dry before turning off the igniton, but this valve has solved all problem with the gas smell and wet carb.

: : 1) The shutoff valve under the gas tank is either open, or leaking. If the handle is pointing down, it's open. If it's horizontal and still leaks by fuel, it's faulty. Its brass and probably scored from years of rust, dirt and gas tank sediment. There are rebuild kits available or you can replace the whole valve which is a bit pricy at $30.00. The valve should always be shut when the car's off!

: Thatnks for the replies! That was FAST. I believe the shut off valve IS the problem. It IS shut off but it still loses gas every week. The garage REALLY smells when I open it up. I thought maybe it was the gas from the sediment bowl/carb/vented gas cap, but I really do lose a lot of gas. Not that it puddles under the car, but really seems to evaporate to nowhere.

: I did get a repacking kit for the valve and did that right, but I think internally it's messed up. I've read that the shut off valve is threaded to the tank, but that taking it off usually ruins it and the tanks. Any suggestions?
