Michael,Paul and John have given you some good advice. I have one thing to add. "Oven Cleaner" will work wounders on a real dirty-greasy block. Use it before removing the shaft and I don't think you would get enough on the bearings to hurt anything.I have used it with good results.I wish I had discovered it years earlier.

I have taken my engine apart to measure for wear, etc.Everything looks pretty good including the main bearings.I think i remember reading that "boiling out" an engine at a rebuilders shop will ruin the poured main bearings.Is this true?How else can the block be cleaned prior to reassembly?
