Yes Michael, the caustic solution used in a boil out tank will destroy the babbitted bearings.The babbitt will also react to the caustic solution and render the solution useless also.Most shops do not like that as they will have to change the solution.Even the newer thermal process with an abrasive cleaning follow-up is too rough for the bearings.The best bet is to clean it yourself by using normal at home type of grease removers.After using a mineral spirits type of grease remover, a large vat of hot water and something like 409, or whatever, you can do an adequate job.

: I have taken my engine apart to measure for wear, etc.Everything looks pretty good including the main bearings.I think i remember reading that "boiling out" an engine at a rebuilders shop will ruin the poured main bearings.Is this true?How else can the block be cleaned prior to reassembly?
