G'Day Hugh,
Here's my philosophy. Craig is right about the "A" not being fitted with a thermostat originally, & it also never had an air filtration system as used on todays vehicles, but I would not dream of running my expensive "as new" rebuild without one. Motor engineers have determined that the optimum operating temperature for most internal combustion engines is around 85 degrees Celcius or 185 degrees Farenheit & the engine will be most efficient when operated at around this temperature. Wear can also be a major problem at temperatures which are much higher or lower than this optimum & it has been proven that an engine which is run constantly for an extended period of time without being allowed to cool down at all shows appreciably less wear in all areas than the same type of engine which has run the same number of hours, but has been intermittently stopped & started & allowed to cool off. The function of the thermostat then is to allow the coolant to reach this temperature as quickly as possible by preventing its movement through the radiator, & then to try & maintain it as close to the temperature as possible. So, the answer is, the "A" has been running for years without a thermostat (& air filter), & fitting one boils down to purely a personal choice.

:You I really need a thermostat my Model A ?My A runs fine, doesn't over heat. I have a fan shroud, does that make any difference? Why didn't Henry use one? Thanks in advance,
