Paul,
Everyone uses windwings differently.The original accessory had a metal channel with a rubber weatherstrip on the leading (vertical) edge.This allowed them to seal against the body and deflect all wind away from the door windows.
I had a repro windwing mounted mirror on my '29 roadster I drove 48,000 miles in the 1970's.I always had to touch the mirror to stabilize it for a clear view.If you try them at least be certain the glass is tight in the mirror assembly.You'll likely find enough movement in your side mounted spares to make mirrors there less than ideal.
