Spar varnish is probably the best way to go.Be sure to get some of the older type (buy it now!) that doesn't have something on the can such as "VOC compliant".Besides the better quality of the older stuff, the newer version will not provide the additional yellowing effect and the wood will look to blond.That is the other problem with uretanes, etc., they are to clear to look right.
