Most modern gears have too shallow a hole. If your's isn't in the engine yet, put it in a drill press and make it just a tad deeper. If it's already in the engine, pull the timing pin, the spark plugs too. NOw you can rock the crankshaft by hand, or by the fan, set the timing pin so it is centered on the shallow dimple, you can feel it, but it's a pain to do when you're in a hurry. Now pick a sharp drill bit that just fits the pin opening. Put a glob of grease in the flutes at the tip of the drill, insert the drill in the hole and spin it with your fingers. The gear material is soft enough that you can drill it this way, and the grease keeps the bits from dropping in the pan. Repeat until you like the way the pin drops in. BUT don't overdo it, you don't want a real hole, just an easily felt dimple!
A's always,
