I had a nearly new battery do this to me in a show restoration Roadster. After cussing a lot, repainting the battery box, etc. I replaced it. It would (out of the car, on wood blocks) just bubble over on it's own. Never did find out what was wrong, but suspect some internal short--except it held it's charge....
Where Scully & Mulder when you need them???
Best advice, bit the bullet and replace the darn thing.
