: : Al,

: : The answer you are looking for is that it measures the average voltage across the points. Since the points open and close, some of the time you will have 6 volts and other times you will have 0 volts. The average voltage can be related to how often the points are open or closed. This in turn can be related to the dwell angle.

: Bob,
: Dwell is a measure of the close time with respect to open time

sorry a miss fire

most of the meters I've looked at, being an EE my buddies thinks I can fix anything so I do tear into them often, they have a driven time base circuit, aka 555 timer ic. These meters when measuring dwell will read consistant at a good range of RPMs. A meter the reads the average voltage will not be consistant, lower at the lower revs, higher at the higher revs due to the voltage ripple produced by the points is smoothed out. The only way to use such a devise is at a set RPM. Not a usefull tool. A true dwell meter will read at cranking, in some situations this is the only way to adjust the points, to up into the 2500 RPMs and not vary.
Hope this clears things up,
GW
