This can be caused by an internal short in the battery. If the car is not driven often, the baatery plates develop chemical oxide coatings. When recharged, some of the coating falls to the bottom of the battery case. Over time, enough material can accumulate to short circuit the cells. Thus even when out of the car, the battery will continue to heat up and spew liquid.

This may work. If the battery is not a sealed type, drain the electrolyte into a clean glass jar. Turn the upside down with the caps off and hit the bottom of the case to knock any sediment loose. Then flush the battery with water, drain it, put the electrolyte back, topoff the cells with water and recharge.
