Carla,

As Jim said the horns were dipped in enamel. The fenders, aprons, etc., were bonderized which I assume to be a phosphate conversion coating. They were then dipped in a vat of enamel, replaced on the conveyer and moved slowly through a baking oven. They were then dipped in a second vat of a slightly different enamel (difference unknown), and run through another oven.No primer was used.

Nearly all steel items of the chassis that had no threaded areas or other critical machined areas were similarly dipped, but were not bonderized, also not primed, and were dipped only once. The result was a finish similar to the fenders but any original metal texture was still apparent. All other black items were sprayed and had a much lower luster.
