:Great site, very detailed I remember reading about the KRW method a while back yet most of the engine builders I talk to pre heat there blocks. I was wondering what the rest of you fellow A mechanics have heard or practice,Thanks

-------------------------------------

Every engine builder is likely to have strong opinions on this issue.Ford chose not to preheat the block because rapid cooling of the babbit was prefered. The melting points of the alloying metals (tin-450 deg., antimony-1050 deg., copper-1980 deg.,Fahrenheit) were so different that slow cooling would allow the metals to separate.Small items such as connecting rods would cool rapidly enough to not be a problem.

Since Ford provided holes for the main bearing babbit to form cleats in the block and the logic of the above description makes sense to me, I'll always go with the cool block method.
